Beautifully Made, Good power, comes with a below average Blade

This is a beautifully made cordless saw. After reading a review in Popular Mechanics I purchased this saw from Amazon. Compared to the competitors the fit and quality of the materials is very evident. I found the controls well marked and easy to adjust. As with any cordless circular saw be prepared for battery drain. Popular Mechanics rated this one at about 110 feet of plywood per battery with the Rigid beating it out at about 140. I compared the two and for me already owning the LXT tool line and the balance/weight won out. You should try the Rigid saw if your open to the Rigid tool line its slightly more heavy duty in terms of power. The one thing I found not so great was the saw blade that comes with the tool. It was kicking and biting every material it was applied too with the Makita general purpose blade. I replaced it with a Freud blade and the saw has been great ever since.

Premium features are worth every penny

This saw costs more than half again as much as the lesser model, and according to the specs, the difference between them boils down to 3 features: blade brake, dust blower and LED — their importance should not be discounted.

Awesome tool for jobs where power is not an option (or even if it is)

I have an old cabin that I’ve been restoring. Since I don’t have power at the property yet this tool has been a great asset for me. Whether I’m cutting plywood or 2×4’s or whatever, the saw operates smoothly and cuts with ease. It is very powerful and built well. The key to this saw is to make sure your battery is charged, but that holds true for any cordless tool. Yes it is heavy, but you want it to be and you know it is a quality tool when you are working with it. I actually prefer to use this at home as well since I don’t have to run an extension cord to where I’m working…

Excellent cordless saw

I’ll just quickly add my praise for an excellent product. After reading reviews I’m careful not to run the battery down too much. And I’d stick with using the high capacity cells with the saw – the run time is much better.

What a super nice tool to have

What a super nice tool to have. It works great! You DO NEED the larger 18 volt battery. The smaller ones will not work. It cuts true and is well built. I’ve used it many times. It’s not heavy and has adjustable blade depth. In order to get to know this tool, I made some lines on some practice wood. That way I knew where the blade cuts and how true it is. Then when I got to my real tasks I knew where along my measurements the blade was going to cut. Actually, I even marked the travel of the blade on my saw, using a small metal file. I marked the saw and placed a tiny bit of red touch up paint on that mark. This made it easy for me to see where to place the saw before making the cut.

Just Right

I like this circular saw – it’s not too heavy and it does the job for me. I’m a left-handed older woman who does a lot of home repair. I only gave it 4 stars because it seems like there are only a couple of blades (fine and coarse) available in this size. I have both and the fine blade did a nice job of shortening some masonite doors for my closet. Someone else said that a disadvantage was that only left-handed people would like it – for me, that’s great! The batteries charge quickly and the adjustments are easy, even for a novice like me.

Love this saw!

I recently bought the Makita BSS610Z and love it! I went for this model over the 611 because of the LED light and dust blower. I have cross cut 2×12 lumber easily, PVC pipe and 3/4 plywood. It is light and easy to handle. I am not a heavy duty user. I volunteer to build theater sets and use this saw for cuts that do not work well on the table saw or miter saw or when the piece cannot be moved to a stationary power tool. It does a great job. I never grab the plug in circular saw any more.

Much better than the BSS611Z.

I had a BSS611Z Makita saw for about two years when the brushes got so hot that the pastic brush holder and case melted. I was able to fix the old saw by cleaning out the melted brush holders and replacing them and the brushes. However, when this happened I needed to have a saw for my job as a Handyman, so I decided to buy the BSS610Z saw first. This is a much better swa because of three things which the 611 does not have, the LED light which shines on the cutting path, the blower, and the saw brake. The light is very nice when the light where I am cutting is not very good, allowing me to cut a straighter line. The saw also blows the cut path to clear of sawdust and the brake stops the blade in very short order. This justifies for me the higher cost of the BSS610Z. Also I have found the the saw has more power up until it just stops when the battery gets low. The 611 would just keep running slower and slower until it stops. Still, I will be more carefull not to let the brushes get to hot because the plastic around the brushes is basicly the same.

Great saw with extra features.

The 610 model has an LED light which I find comes in very handy in low light or when it gets late (which always seems to happen on projects at home). Also has the blade brake for extra safety.

electric brake on the 610 Makita circular saw

 on November 19, 2013
magnetic / electric brake on the 610 – this one. The cheaper model (611) of Makita 6-1/2 circular saw does not have the electric brake. On this machine, the 610 – the blade stops INSTANTLY when you release the trigger. Safest saw on the market. On 1 battery charge the saw worked half a day, then recharged in 30 minutes. Standing on the side of a steep hill, I miter cut 8 – 2×10 treated (wet) lumber, rip-cut 96 inches of 2x lumber, and made 16 cross-cuts on 2x lumber – no cord, safe, fits perfectly in my hand.
