The Pit Bull of Disposers

This unit is about as powerful and solid as you’ll find anywhere for residential applications. It replaces an old Kenmore 1/3 HP unit that was leaking. My little home was built in the 1930’s (long before many of the modern conveniences we take for granted today), so I had some plumbing challenges to overcome – certainly no fault of the Waste King 9980. For the record, I paid about $107.00 shipped to my door.
Great Disposal–easy install

We had an 1/3 hp insinkerator badger and the grinding chamber actually cracked and split. So, off to shopping–came across this unit and wanted to try a different company’s machine. The price was right for the size of the unit. I took this out of the box, reviewed the install and completed the project in less than 45 minutes. The unit looks great and fit perfectly where the badger was. Of interest, the 9980 comes with a 90 degree elbow out of the side of the machine to hook to the waste line. On a double sink, this wouldn’t work. So I used the tail from the badger which was a straight pipe and discarded the elbow. The unit then fit right into place–picture perfect. It seems to me on the height and hookup, the measurements were exact to that of the insinkerator badger. So the hardest part of the install was removing the old unit which was seemingly extremely tight in place–that took the majority of the time. Of other interest, when you go to fit the collar to the unit, make sure you use soft soap as it suggests–the unit popped right into place with no struggle. Also, the instruction says on a stainless sink to not use plumber’s putty but to use the rubber gasket–did and no leaks.
Well-made garbage disposal, lifetime warranty, great price!

A very good/ lesser known alternative to other well-known brands

I’m tentative in giving anything five stars without it proving itself first and am holding back with a four star rating for now. My one dislike is listed at the end and it is unclear if it would ever become an issue. At the time of writing, the product has a 4-1/2 star rating.
Should Have Been Easier To Install

This product really, really frustrated me. I did tons of research and knew that this was probably the best disposal I could buy. Locally, I could only get In-Sink-Erator. I’m not interested in that brand. So now I will tell you why I dropped a star on this great disposal.
really a 5 STAR review…excellent disposal, easy install, quiet

3 stars only so people on the fence about which disposal brand to choose will read this and give Waste King some well deserved consideration.
Great addition to our new home

We just got into our new home and the old Badger 5 was showing signs of very near death and it was leaking a lot. I spent a lot of research on garbage disposals and Waste King seemed far superior and at the price Amazon offers it, it was an easy decision.
Does not feed well

While this disposal is quiet, food frequently ends up stuck on the center of the cutting wheel where it just sits while the disposal spins merrily away. The only fix is to shut the disposal off, reach in and reposition the food so that the blades will grab it and then turn it back on. There were no installation problems and I have not experienced the drainage problem that another reviewer mentioned. If I had it to do over again I would not buy a waste king.
Do your research and consider the Waste King 8000 model, temper your expectations on sound levels.

My home was built with a Badger 5 unit which lasted roughly 9 years of almost daily use. It developed a slow leak which ruined the floor board under the sink unfortunately. Pretty much off of Amazon reviews I bought this unit, which was 30$ more than the Waste King 8000 because I thought I wouldn’t have to change the flange from the Badger with the 9980. That was wrong, I couldn’t get the 9980 to mount to the Badger flange. So I pretty much should have just bought the 8000 saved the 30$ and had the plumbers putty on hand from the get-go.
One word: WOW!

So after multiple ISE Badger units corroded since we built our house in 1995 I got tired of replacing it over and over so I went looking for a higher quality product even if I had to pay more. The most expensive ISE unit costs $340 at local home improvement retailers and only comes with a 7 year warranty. The Waste King was a PERFECT fit replacement for the Badger 1 (1/3 HP unit) and is 1 HP. Furthermore, it comes with a lifetime warranty and stainless steel cutters. The unit is at least 50% quieter and mounted effortlessly on the ISE mount that was already installed on my sink. Here’s how…
